Kielder Observatory is an astronomical attraction at Kielder Water & Forest Park run by the Kielder Observatory Astronomical Society. Please visit www.kielderobservatory.org for all event bookings.

When you think of astronomy, you think of nights under some of the best skies in the world here at Kielder.

However, only 93 million miles away from us is one of the most dynamic, exciting and interesting astronomical targets imaginable, and it's visible in broad daylight... that's right, our Sun, your nearest star.

For over 4 Billion years it has shone, bringing life to our planet, but have you ever seen it in all of its true glory? These amazing events in July will bring our nearest star closer then ever before.

Seeing the Sun in a way only about 0.05% of the entire planet have ever seen it is an unforgettable experience We have a range of specialist solar telescopes and filters designed to show you the incredible dynamism of the Sun's nuclear furnace.

We are using the warm balmy summer evenings to observe our incredible star, see its prominences leaping from the surface as it produces enough energy every second to keep a city powered for over a hundred years.

You'll see Sunspots both on the surface, and we'll explain to you through viewing them and the associated active regions in the Sun's atmosphere, how we get Aurora on Earth. Objects which change minute by minute, this is a day filled with wonder as the views constantly change on the surface of our nearest star.

Hurry as these events will sell out. Seeing the Sun in a way that is safe, and thrilling is for many a once in a lifetime experience, and who knows, you may even be here when the sun unleashes one of nature's most incredible sights, a Coronal Mass Ejection...an explosion on the Sun that would reach in distance from the Earth to the Moon.

We'll link in to space telescopes to show you even more from the Sun, live from our satellite internet link, and give you a guided tour through our amazing Universe, all in the same day.
