Kielder is lucky to have one of the biggest populations of red squirrels in the UK, and autumn is a great time to spot them as they spend their days gathering food and stashing it away in hidden ‘caches’ to see them through the winter.
But, we may not always have them at Kielder and northern England. Populations are diminishing - habitat loss, competition from greys, and deadly squirrel pox mean that without continuous and extensive conservation, they could be lost from the region within just 10 years.
This week, we are supporting the national awareness campaign and also Red Squirrels North East's Raise FOR Reds campaign.
