Composer and musician, Jenny Mahler thinks she knows how and over the course of 2022 will be  immersing herself in the landscape and culture and working with local people to compose, record and perform the areas very own choral music.

Jenny, who is a classically trained pianist, will be making the first of a number of visits to Kielder this week. She has directed, performed with and composed for choirs internationally and as a singer-songwriter, has created songs which have been featured on BBC radio and elsewhere both in the UK and abroad.  As an instrumentalist and vocalist she has performed at a range of venues and festivals, including The Sage Gateshead.

Jenny says “'I'm thrilled to have been given the opportunity to create music in such a wonderful and unique environment.  Coincidentally, I'll be giving a nod to my Grandad who, for a couple of years, lived and worked in Kielder as a forest ranger.”

Jenny's commission as Composer in Residence, comes as part of a Kielder Water & Forest Park Development Trust programme funded by Arts Council England. Over the next year, the programme will also create a new contemporary viewpoint feature on the fell above Kielder village and continue outreach work with schools and young people to explore the myth of the Kielder Brag. Newcastle University architecture students will also design and build a sensory shelter space within Calvert Kielder, to be enjoyed by guests and visitors.
