Raku pottery event

Overview

About Raku: Raku ware is a type of Japanese pottery that is traditionally used in Japanese tea ceremonies, most often in the form of tea bowls.

About the workshop: Marvin Kitson of Newcastle-based Muddy Fingers Pottery will be running raku decorating and firing sessions at Leaplish every hour over the course of the day. Participants can decorate ready-made bisque-fired tiles with special glazes and watch the firing process, which uses a special kiln fuelled by propane gas that can be used safely outdoors.

The firing process takes around 30 minutes and tiles can be collected once cooled and taken home. This is the perfect activity to engage with before enjoying a walk, cycle ride or anything else Kielder has to offer, before returning to collect your finished glazed and fired tile.

Times: Drop-in throughout the day – glazing sessions and firings will take place from 11am until 3.30pm.

Participant requirements: None – all materials and equipment will be provided.

Cost: Tiles cost from £3 – sessions last around 45 minutes from glazing through to firing and finishing.
