This sculpture is a stock of pink sandstone blocks arranged in courses around a core. The surfaces have been closely worked by hand to create the sense of an ascending spiral throughout the column. Kielder Column was commissioned in 1990 for the Gateshead Garden Festival and re-erected at Bakethin Weir in 1999.

Road Directions

From Newcastle or Carlisle, follow the A69 to Hexham then follow the B6320 to Bellingham (brown-signed Kielder Water & Forest) and take the C200 to Kielder Water & Forest Park.

From Jedburgh/Edinburgh take the A68 south to Otterburn, then the B6320 to Bellingham and follow the brown signs to Kielder Water & Forest Park along the C200.

Please remember to fill up your tank before you begin your journey as there are no petrol stations in the immediate Kielder Water & Forest Park area.

OS map ref. NY643912. Turn off the C200 where the road sign indicated Bakethin Weir and walk along the weir access road to where Kielder Column is sited. Kielder Column is fully accessible.

Parking & Transport

  • Parking (charge) - It is not necessary to purchase a car parking ticket at every visitor centre you visit. Just buy one £4 ticket at your first stop off and it is valid to use at the other visitor centres throughout the whole day. Alternatively, if you only park for one hour or less, the charge will be £1.50.
