The Official Visitor Site for Kielder Water & Forest Park
![]()
This event promises to be a real show stopper. The Kielder Observatory is situated in England's darkest sky location and thus is ideal for observing the night sky. The perseid meteor shower is a wonderful event that starts in the distant solar system as a comet. When the sun's gravity pulls on the comet it approaches the warmer inner solar system, where it melts and forms a tail. The thousands of tiny particles that make up this tail provide an awesome display of shooting stars as they hit the earth's atmosphere. Come to the observatory to see this event and learn how they are created.
