Kielder Water & Forest Park re-opening - updated 5 September 2020

A range of facilities are now open in Kielder Water & Forest Park including car parks and some public toilets.

We urge anybody who chooses to visit to be respectful of local communities. Please stay away from village and residential centres, and observe Government guidelines on social distancing wherever you are in the Park.

The measures outlined below are in line with recent Government guidance updates, but we will keep them under review and they may be subject to change.

Car parks

The following car parks are open:

  • Hawkhope
  • Kielder Dam South Abutment
  • Tower Knowe
  • Matthew’s Linn
  • Bakethin Nature Reserve
  • Kielder Castle
  • Skyspace lower car park
  • Elf Kirk
  • Kielder Waterside 

Normal car parking charges apply.  All of these car parks, with the exception of Kielder Castle, Lower Skyspace and Elf Kirk, can be paid for in advance at www.bookwhen.com/car-parking and we urge anybody who is visiting to do so.

Kielder Membership/Discovery Pass holders can use their pass to park, as normal.

The Forest Drive is open.

Overnight stays in motorhomes are permitted at Kielder Castle, Elf Kirk and Tower Knowe car parks at a cost of £10 per night.

Public toilets

The public toilets opposite Kielder Castle and at Tower Knowe are open.
When using these, please follow social distancing guidelines, use the sanitiser and liquid soaps provided, abide by all safety and usage signage, and be considerate and respectful of those whose job it is to keep these facilities clean.

Park wide

We’d like to remind people of the following:

  • Entering the water is not permitted for any reason
  • Fires and barbeques are strictly forbidden
  • Where necessary, we will work with Northumbria Police to enforce these rules.

We would also ask that people take their litter home or use bins provided, and to dispose of dog waste properly, to help limit the risk of infection. Please do not leave dog mess bags lying around the area.

Angling/Tower Knowe 

Kielder Water is open for bank and boat fishing.

Bank times are 06:00 21:00 or sunset whichever is sooner. Boat fishing times are 08:30 to 17:30.

Permits for bank and boat fishing must be purchased using www.bookwhen.com/watersideparksnorth. Specific terms and conditions relate to boat fishing so please refer to these on the Bookwhen link.

The gift shop at Tower Knowe is open from 10am until 5pm, Monday to Sunday and has some limited stock of bait and tackle available. The shop also stocks gifts, homeware and take-away treats. 

Any purchases made in the shop are by card payment only. Please observe our social distancing instructions and signs and use the hand gel provided.

Wafflemeister at Tower Knowe is also open.

Kielder Cycle Centre

The Kielder Cycle Centre, near Kielder Castle, is open 7 days a week for hire, accessory and clothing sales, as well as a range of cold drinks, energy bars and chocolate.  Limited number of hire bikes available, so it is advisable to book in advance. The Bike Place at Kielder Waterside is also open for bike hire from Tuesday to Sunday. https://www.thebikeplace.co.uk/kielder-waterside

  • The exhibition at Tower Knowe
