Football legend helps disabled anglers

Football legend Jack Charlton has been helping disabled anglers to score at Kielder Water today (Wednesday 4 June).

Nearly 80 disabled anglers lined the shore of northern Europe’s largest man-made lake for the Jack Charlton Disabled Angler’s Cup – a popular fly and bait competition held annually at Northumbrian Water’s Leaplish Waterside Park.

Jack Charlton, who was part of the England football team when they won the 1966 World Cup, said: “The Disabled Anglers cup at Kielder is one of my favourite events of the season. I really enjoy coming here and I don’t think I’ve ever missed one – I normally wander around the banks and help people and give advice. These events are always a success and it’s really the people that come that make it.”

Last year’s champion, blind angler David Young, from Whitby said: “It’s been a very wet day and I haven’t had as much success as last year but I’ve enjoyed it. There are people in wheelchairs, people who have broken arms, people who have broken legs, and I consider myself to have broken eyes. But we all love to come here and take part in this fantastic event in such a beautiful location and it’s nice to see old friends again.”
