St Mungo's Church

St Mungo's Church

Overview

A 13th C church on the site of an earlier 8th C one, with strong associations with Saint Mungo (also known as Kentigern).  In medieval times the parish covered the largest area in England. The church was extensively rebuilt in the 19th C.

Beautiful 13th century church with a long history of worship by local families through the centuries. Stained glass windows by Kempe, renowned Gothic Revival artist, also stone effigies and other important memorials.

The building has many Northumbrian characteristics, with a western bellcote rather than a tower, a chancel almost as long as the four bay nave and featuring tall eastern lancet windows.
